The US rained hellfire on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August 1945, respectively. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, turning the cities to dust in seconds and leaving behind lasting horrific damages.
J. Robert Oppenheimer, often cited as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project during World War II that was set up to develop the first nuclear weapons, later expressed these chilling words,
Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.
This short sighted invention to achieve an impulsive victory to silence a stubborn Japanese regime and a haunting event in history is now what is stopping the allies from making the right moves to help Ukraine.
Putin knows this and is clearly using this very threat that US used on Japan to now do what he wants almost unchecked. Yes, there are sanctions but to what end? Will they work? Rather will they work before Ukraine and their people are slowly and painfully obliterated? Which I sincerely hope doesn't pan out that way for Ukraine.
Western officials believe Putin wants to overthrow Ukraine's government and replace it with a compliant regime, reviving Moscow's Cold War-era influence.
His comments have raised fears that the invasion of Ukraine could lead to nuclear war, whether by design or mistake. This reveals the dangers of concentration of power on one individual who is afterall a human being. One being, who could lose his mind and destroy everything at the press of a button. This is what Putin said in a televised address,
I have made the decision of a military operation, whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so to create threats for our country, our people should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences that you have never experienced in your history.
Realising that there is nothing we can do to change the past, the atomic bomb has been invented and cannot be undone, the likes of Putin might always be around in all generations to come and this type of reckless behaviour might always be around because of nuclear weapons not as a deterrent but as a tool for blackmail to be allowed to do what they want.
As plain and naive as it sounds, the world leaders must find a solution to this and disarm and dispose all nuclear weapons, if that's possible. But this is just wishful thinking, albeit one that would be the most significant one in the history of humanity.
Nuclear plants running on nuclear fission must be eliminated as well. If ever, nuclear fusion is successfully achieved, nuclear fusion plants are always a safer option.
